Abstract

Research in our lab has combined matrix isolation with 193 nm irradiation from a high powered excimer laser. This has permitted characterization of molecular ions as well as radicals. With this in mind, studies of benzene, deuterio and hexafluorobenzene were undertaken. Irradiation of benzene in argon matrices produces mainly the benzene isomers benzvalene, Dewar benzene and fulvene. Fragmentation of the benzene molecule also occurs, with propyne and acetylene as the main products. The same behavior is observed with $C_{6}$$D_{6}$. In comparison, irradiation of matrices containing $C_{6}$$F_{6}$ and either $Cl_{2}$ or $CCl_{4}$ led to production of ions in the matrix. Assignments to the $C_{6}$$F_{6}^{+}$ radical action are proposed.
