Abstract

Research in our lab has combined matrix isolation with 193 nm irradiation from a high powered excimer laser. This has permitted characterization of molecular ions as well as radicals. With this in mind, studies of benzene, deuterio and hexafluorobenzene were undertaken. Irradiation of benzene in argon matrices produces mainly the benzene isomers benzvalene, Dewar benzene and fulvene. Fragmentation of the benzene molecule also occurs, with propyne and acetylene as the main products. The same behavior is observed with C6D6. In comparison, irradiation of matrices containing C6F6 and either Cl2 or CCl4 led to production of ions in the matrix. Assignments to the C6F6+ radical action are proposed.
