Abstract

Modifications in the M.S.U. spectrometer have increased its versatility and improved its performance. Details of the design and performance of the following features will be described: water-cooled zirconium arc and carbon rod sources, achromatic fore-optics and polarizer assembly, rotating entrance slit to the monochromator, grating drive assembly, and exit optics which include an alternate path for direct Foucault testing of monochromator adjustment. The overall effect of these features has been to extend the operating range (formerly from $1-3 \mu$) to $6 \mu$, give resolution of $\sim 0.03 cm^{-1}$ at $\sim 4200 cm^{-1}$, and permit frequency measurements reproducible to $\sim 0.002 cm^{-1}$.
