Abstract

Interprofessional education (IPE) is essential for all health science students. Approximately 87% of advanced practice nurses (APRNs) practice in ambulatory settings. A body of evidence supports simulation as an effective approach to delivering IPE. The purpose of this evidence-based practice change was to implement ambulatory care IP simulations for APRN students. Two IP simulations were implemented in the spring 2023 semester with family nurse practitioner and psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner students along with students from seven other programs. The experience was conducted virtually and included asynchronous educational modules and synchronous interprofessional patient care simulations with a standardized patient. An interprofessional faculty team developed all aspects of the experience including the patient scenario, medical record, orientation, and pre-sim module content. The simulation consisted of a pre-brief, patient encounters, case conference, care plan delivery, and debrief. The APRN students completed a pre/post assessment tool, the Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised instrument, which measures changes in perceptions of IPE and collaborative practice. Outcomes from the project included a large effect size of 1.03 for the sum scores pre to post for the APRN students. Of the ten items on the tool, the highest effect size pre to post was 1.24 on the item "I understand the roles of other health professionals within an interprofessional team." corresponding to the learning objectives of the activity. The IP simulations had positive outcomes and should be expanded to include more students who will practice in ambulatory settings to increase IP competencies prior to graduation.
