Abstract

Unlike other large cities, Columbus lacks a community science festival. Consequently, we have organized the JW Family Science Extravaganza as a proof-in-principal of such an event. Now in its third year, the JW Family Science Extravaganza is a satellite event of the USA Science and Engineering Festival. The event is held in an elementary school within the Hilliard City Schools district and features over twenty inquiry based activities for students and their families to explore.

Description

IMPACT. 1: To promote awareness of, interest in, and exploration of STEM related topics to elementary age students and their families. -- 2. To reinforce to students that individuals of any gender or ethnicity can be scientists using a "draw a scientist" activity mirroring the diverse group of volunteer scientists at the festival. -- 3. To support STEM education within the Hilliard City Schools district by mapping festival activities to the current Ohio revised science standards and model curriculum for grades K through eight.
