Abstract
The microwave spectrum of $CH_{3}OH$ has been investigated between 90 and 200 Gc., in order to study the torsional barrier shape. Assignments of a number of b type series allowed extrapolation to the corresponding Q branch origins, at much higher frequencies. The origins were fitted by least squares to a semi-empirical formula proposed by $Kirtman.^{1}$ It was found that the barrier terms, $V_{3}$ and $V_{5}$, are strongly contaminated by vibration-torsion interactions, in particular, molecular flexing during torsion. Preliminary values obtained are $V_{3} = 376.4 cm^{-1}$ and $V_{5} = -6.7 cm^{-1}$. Brief studies of $CD_{3}OH$ and $CH_{3}OD$ yielded torsional barriers of 372.3 and $369.7 cm^{-1}$ respectively. $^{1}$ B. Kirtman, J. Chem. Phys. 37, 2516 (1962).
