Abstract

Fuller describes his introduction to administration and the steps to become president of Farleigh Dickinson. He describes the different administrative styles of persons in the College, other colleges, and the University. He discussed the conflict between time for answering crisis and time for planning (budget, organization). Fuller takes great pride in the successes of the many persons he trained in administration after appointing them as assistants or associate deans. Dr. Fuller describes the problems associated with reorganizing the College of Arts and Sciences. He was interested in maintaining a liberal arts program. The division of the budget between the departments of science, the departments of social studies, and the departments of humanities was a challenge to the organizational structure of the College. Fuller also discussed some of the issues related to the establishment of the College of Biological Sciences and the University College. After his experience as President of Farleigh Dickinson, he compared the democratic processes of a small university with a large university. He observed that unionization occurred in schools that had dictatorial approaches.
