Abstract

Israeli and Palestinian national communities have constructed the concept of "homeland" as a crucial component of identity. Homeland is understood as an emotional space and has also been linked to exclusive control of territory. This perception leads to exclusion of the “other”—from the land and also by denying the “other’s” claim to a cultural homeland. A redefinition of the homeland is essential to the process of reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis, and can be used as a method of identity transcendence.
