Abstract
Dr. Richard Nelson discusses his career in Emergency Medicine, an emerging specialty when he started medical school at Ohio State in 1975. His interest in Emergency Medicine began when he shadowed Columbus Fire Department paramedic units and became familiar with emergency departments throughout the area during medical school. He completed his residency at Akron City Hospital, which was an early leader in developing resident training in the field, then he returned to Ohio State to develop its Emergency Medicine residency program as a faculty member under the direction of Professor Doug Rund. Eventually, Emergency Medicine became its own department, and Dr. Nelson served as its Medical Director. He was also very involved with the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), eventually serving as ABEM President. Dr. Nelson reflects on how Emergency Medicine has grown throughout his lifetime and career, increasing not only in the number of certified programs offered nationwide but also becoming far more established and respected.
