Abstract

The absolute strengths of the fundamental absorption bands of the $CF_{2}$ molecule have been $predicted,^{1}$ but no measurements have been made. We have investigated the strength of the $\nu_{3}$ band using a tunable diode laser to measure individual line strengths. Experiments were performed in a flow tube using a multipass cell. Two methods were used to quantify the $CF_{2}$ flow. In the first, $CF_{2}HCl$ was thermally decomposed in an internal oven, and HCl infrared absorption was used as a measure of the column density of $CF_{2}$. In the second, a tunable dye laser was used to measure absorption in the $\widetilde{A} {^{1}}B_{1}-\widetilde{X}{^{1}}A_{1}$ electronic band, for which peak absorption cross sections have been $measured.^{2}$ Results of both techniques will be discussed.
