Abstract
“The infrared spectra of $B_{2}H_{2} D$ and $B_{2}D_{h} H$ are reported. In a sample of partially deuterated diborane there are twenty-one different species, represented by seven molecular formulas ranging from $B_{2}H_{6}$ to $B_{2}H_{6}$. These exist in equilibrium with one another and cannot be separated by chemical or physical means. However, spectra of individual formula-groups can be obtained by compensating for the spectra of other species. Such techniques are discussed in detail. Prominent infrared bands for $B_{2}H_{5} D$ appear at ca. 938, 956, 1080, 1250, 1600, 1720, 1900 and $2550 cm^{-1}$; and for $B_{2}D_{5}H$, at ca. 718, 730, 875, 900, 1075, 1200, 1450, 1700, 1860, 1950 and $2550 cm^{-1}$. Spectral information obtained from the partially deuterated diboranes is utilized in assigning the observed bands of monomethyldiborane and three deuteroderivatives ($CH_{a}B_{2}D_{2}$, $CD_{a}B_{2}H_{5}$ and $CD_{a}B_{2}D_{5}$ to characteristic bond vibrations.”
