Abstract

The multiphoton ionization and laser induced fluorescence spectra of several jet-cooled alkyl anilines are reported. Low frequency vibrations observed in the $S_{0}$ and $S_{1}$ states of N-methyl aniline (NMA). N-ethyl aniline (NEA), N,N-dimethyl aniline (DMA), and N,N-diethyl aniline (DEA) are attributed to torsional modes of the substituent. Surprisingly, the complexity observed in the DMA excitation and single vibronic fluorescence spectra is dramatically reduced in NMA, NEA and DEA, suggesting that the rich spectra observed in DMA is the result of the coupled methyl torsion of both methyl groups within the substituent.
