Abstract

Theories of mixed crystals, radiationless transitions, complex molecular spectra and resonant Raman cross-sections are closely related. They all involve several discrete states, interacting or otherwise, coupled to one or more continua. The Green’s function technique developed for multi-component mixed crystals is adapted to molecular spectroscopy. The guest levels become the molecular transitions; the host band plays the role of the radiative and non-radiative continua. Explicit expressions for the line-shape functions, the quantum yields and the resonant Raman cross-sections will be given, using the napthalene second singlet state absorption as an example. Comparison between the resonant Raman cross-sections obtained in this work and the usual Raman intensity theory will also be made.
