Abstract

Do politicians have the ability to influence and embolden their followers to commit acts of violence? This thesis explores the presidency of Donald Trump and his rhetoric on Twitter to understand his impact on increases in anti-Latinx hate crimes. We utilize the emboldenment hypothesis to analyze the ways that Trump may have caused increased violence against this population. The emboldenment theory predicts that negative government attention towards a specific minority population leads to increased violence against them. Using his past tweets, significant political events during his presidency, and FBI hate crime data, we concluded that Trump's Twitter rhetoric was less impactful than political events in emboldening followers to commit anti-Latinx hate crimes.
