Abstract

I went on a week-long research trip with the Caretta Research Project on Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge in Savannah, Georgia in the summer to gain in-field research experience with sea turtles. During nesting season, we patrolled the beach each night searching for female turtles crawling up the beach to lay their eggs in the sand dunes. Once they were mid-laying we collected data on the nest and the mother and made sure the nest was in a safe location from the high tide line. We also protected the nests from predators by putting a fence around each nest, which also helps mark the location. I worked with a team of 7 other individuals that helped collect data, carry-out necessary daily activities to maintain our workspace, and create a special bond with each person. This helped me gain experience in a field I am interested in and also secured what I want to do later in life in my career path.
