Abstract
A brief survey is made of the methods used to calculate electronic spectra. It is suggested that these should be extended and modified in a rather flexible manner and that they be adapted freely in order to treat particular problems. Some general criteria are proposed for this purpose. The approach is illustrated by reference to the identification of those singlet and triplet excited states which are observed in the emission and absorption spectra of condensed hydrocarbons.
