Abstract

It is shown that the effective atomic charges1 determined from experimental integrated infrared intensities are correlated with the electron population densities defined by Mulliken. Population analyses are used to interpret the differences in the experimental effective charges observed for hydrocarbon systems and to predict the sum of fundamental band intensities in various compounds.
