Abstract
Analyses of the infrared absorption fundamentals of HCl and DCl in CCl4 solution have been made using the method of moments. From measurements of the fourth moments of the absorption bands of this isotopic pair, both the mean square torque and the mean square force due to solute-solvent interaction are calculated. The observed temperature dependences of these quantities are compared with theoretical results obtained using a simple cavity model.
