Abstract
Monomeric cuprous halides have been produced in the vapor state as intermediate reaction products of copper and the halogen gases. To produce these species the gases were flowed over copper turnings at $1100^{\circ} K$ in a quasi-free space microwave absorption cell. Rotational transitions of cuprous chloride, cuprous bromide, and cuprous iodide have been measured for the first time in the microwave region. A total of ten isotopic species have been observed over e wide range of rotational and vibrational states, Dunham analyses of this data yield values for $Y_{01} Y_{11} Y_{21} Y_{31} Y_{02} Y_{12}$, and $Y_{03}$ and the potential constants of $a_{0}$, $a_{1}$, $a_{2}$, $a_{3}$. These constants make possible the calculation of B$_{e}$, $\omega_{e}$, $\omega_{e}x_{e}$, and $r_{e}$ for all isotopic species. The nuclear quadrupole structures of CuI and CuBr were resolved sufficiently to permit the calculation of quadrupole coupling constants, molecular field gradients, and the electro-negativity of $Cu_{I}$.
