Abstract
Wendell Ellenwood has had a life-long relationship with OSU. His father graduated from OSU in 1915. On visits to the campus, they would visit with OSU friends. He describes the qualifications for stadium dorm scholarships and the establishment of the Tower Club, Stadium Club, and Buckeye Club. Student activities included polo, marching band and ROTC. After graduation, Ellenwood was sent to OCS and on to Europe as a member of the Third U.S. Army. Some of his army experiences are summarized.
After completing his M.S. and working for the Civil Service Commission for 11 years, Ellenwood was appointed Director of the Ohio Union. The Drake Union was built during his administration. The various types of programs and events in the Unions are summarized. The influences of economics and culture on programming are described. He considers the 1960’s as the “good old days,” the time when the Union was the hearthstone of the campus. He sees signs that the Union may become the “hearthstone” again. The role of Mrs. Fawcett in supporting many campus activities is mentioned.
After retirement Ellenwood has assisted other colleges in establishing “hearthstone Unions.”
