Abstract

The absorption spectrum of diatomic argon has been investigated in the 700−1100\AA region with a 6.65m normal-incidence vacuum spectrograph in the second order. So far eight discrete band systems have been observed and analyzed. Individual bands are violet-shaded without exception and most of them show rotational structure. Following our analyses, all these band systems are produced in transitions from the stable ground state to upper states which are also stable in varying degree. The dissociation energy of the ground state is determined to be D00=76±7cm−1.
