Abstract

The gas-phase ozonolysis of vinyl chloride was carried out in a linear reactor at partial pressures of a few Torr. The products were analyzed by infrared-matrix and microwave spectroscopy. In addition to other well known products, chloroethylene oxide has been identified as a new ozonolysis product of vinyl chloride. Chloroethylene oxide is an interesting example of a halogen substituted 3-ring molecule. It presents a test for the Walsh model and the concept of conjugation between the ring and the attached substituent. Various isotopic species have been analyzed and the quadrupole coupling constants have been determined.
