Abstract

Due to the interest in developing high energy density batteries, materials which exhibit fast ionic conductivity such as $\beta$ and $\beta""$-alumina are of current interest. Nitrosonium ion $(NO^{+})$ is substituted into $\beta$ and $\beta""$-alumina to function as a probe ion in order to perform a comparative study of the potential energy enviornment of the conduction planes in these crystals. The intramolecular and external modes due to $NO^{+}$ are identified. Finally a temperature-dependent study of the frequencies and bandwidths of the $NO^{+}$ intramolecular mode is presented and discussed.
