Abstract

The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of copper atoms in a krypton matrix have been measured as a function of temperature. Focusing on the $^{2}P\leftarrow ^{2} S$ transition and applying a moment analysis we have learned that 1) the observed triplet of bands arises from simultaneous spin-orbit and Jahn-Teller interactions in the excited state, 2) the metal-matrix cage interactions in the large enough to invert the sign of the spin-orbit coupling constant and 3) the orbital g factor of the $^{2}P$ state is significantly reduced due to the Jahn-Teller effect. Discussion of other atomic and cluster transitions will also be given.
