Abstract

Formation of the O anion in the gas phase has been observed following the multiphoton excitation of nitric oxide at low presssure. By examining both the the multiphoton lonization spectrum and the formation of O ions from this molecule as a function of laser frequency, we are able to identify dissociative attachment of photoelectrons to the A2Σ+ electronic state of nitric oxide as the mechanism responsible for formation of negative ions.
