Abstract

Polarization studies are hindered by emission intensity changes (caused by creation of a photo product) which can interfere with, e.g., relative emission quantum yield measurements. The polarization of the weak b2g lines is found to be mostly, but not exclusively, in plane. If solvent perturbations and overlap are, as indicated, unimportant, this result Leads to unresolved inconsistencies with the 3B1u assignment for the lowest triplet state of benzene.
