Abstract

For my step project, I participated in a week-long study abroad trip with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, (ODI); Ohio States newly founded “Higher Education in the Dominican Republic: Access, Equity and Opportunity” program. While abroad, I had the opportunity to visit many educational institutions as well as go on historical and cultural excursions. Visiting institutions as well as historical and cultural sites has allowed me to be aware of the access gaps within the various levels of the education system. Achievements within academics are constantly low for Afro-Dominicans, especially those who have poor economic status (disadvantaged) communities. This trip has allowed me to have a better understanding of how gender, race, class, and geographic location may impact education, economic and social cultural opportunities for Afro-Dominicans.
