Abstract

Strong microwave absorption in KOH-doped KI crystals has been observed in the 8-40 GHz region by standard transmission techniques at 1.3$^{\circ} K$. KOH:KI is different from the other hydroxide-doped alkali halides in that ultraviolet dichroism experiments indicate a [110] dipolar equilibrium $orientation.^{2}$ The microwave results are discussed in terms of the tunneling of the $OH^{-}$ ion among the equivalent [110] directions.
