Abstract

The ultraviolet absorption and emission spectra of various indoles have been investigated under various conditions. Selective shifts due to solvent-solute interactions and hydrogen-bonding perturbations were helpful in characterizing the lowest excited electronic states and establish the composite nature of the lowest absorption bands in some indoles. LCI-SCF calculations of the transition energies, oscillator strengths, and polarizations of various absorption bands are compared to experimental results.
