Abstract
Interest in accurate measurements of spectral band shapes has intensified since the introduction of the method of ``moments” and the correlation-function approach. Quantities such as the mean-square torque and the correlation time for molecular reorientation are calculated from experimentally determined profiles of vibration-rotation bands in the I.R. and Raman spectra of liquids. However, these quantities are subject to error due to spectrometer resolution and noise, base-line drift and finite frequency limits. A quantitative analysis of the effects of these errors on the band moments and the correlation function will be presented and illustrated with an example.""
