Abstract

Emission and absorption spectra of CeO are very complex and, although may bands have previously been rotationally analyzed, very little information is known about the relative positions of the electronic states or their vibrational frequencies. Fluorescence has been excited, mainly in rotationally analyzed bands involving the $X_{2} (\Omega = 3)$ or $X_{1} (\Omega= 2)$ states, using argon ion and tunable dye lasers. The spectra, which show both vibrational progressions and transitions to several low lying states indicate that $X_{2}$ is $80.4\pm 0.7$ $cm^{-1}$ above $X_{1}$, and lead to an energy level diagram in which several low lying states are placed relative to $X_{1}$ and $X_{2}$. Several bands in the blue region have been rotationally analyzed and fluorescence, excited within these bands, shows that their lower states are part of the $X_{2}$ state manifold. Optical optical double resonance spectra have been obtained using an argon plus a dye (Rhodamine 6G) laser. The observations are shown to be consistent with the interpretation of the fluorescence spectra.
