Abstract

The Raman and infrared $(4000-200 cm^{-1})$ spectra of Trichlorocyclopropenium tetrachloro-aluminate, $C_{3}Cl_{2}^{+}AlCl^-_{A}$, have been studied. The Raman spectrum including polarization measurements was determined in liquid $SO_{2}$ solution. Assignment of the fundamental vibrations of $C_{3}Cl_{3}^{+}$ was made based on a $D_{3b}$ symmetry model, and normal coordinate analysis of the in-plane vibrations was carried out using the Urey-Bradley Force Field. The results show that the C-C stretching force constant for $C_{3}Cl_{3}^{+}$ is greater than for conventional aromatic species such as benzene.
