Abstract

Electronic excited states of the recently reported unusual cyclic tetraene, $2,2-dimethylisoindene,^{1}$ have been investigated by a variety of spectroscopic techniques and are compared with those of the parent, $o-quinodimethane,^{2}$ and related o-quinoid hydrocarbons. The compounds of this series show strong fluorescence as well as significant photochemical reactivity (conversion to benzocyclobutenes, e.g., $1 \rightarrow 3$). The results are discussed in terms of n-electron calculations which suggest the presence of a low-lying predominantly doubly excited state similar to those discussed in recent years in linear polyenes.[FIGURE]
