Abstract
The absorption and emissioin spectra of $Eu^{2+}$ were studied in various non-aqueous solvents and in the presence of a variety of anions (i.e. $Cl^{-}$, $NO^{-}_{3}$, $SO_{4}^{-}$). The fluorescence excitation maximum was at 392--394 $m\mu$, whereas excitation at 360, 375, 380, 410 and 460 $m\mu$ gave also rise to weak omission. Two major emission bands were observed at 592 $m\mu$ ($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{1}$) and at 613 to 616 $m\mu$ ($^{3} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{2}$). In addition, some weak emission was also observed at 580 $m\mu$ ($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{0}$). The intensity and the structure of the former emission bands were found to depend strongly upon the solvent, the anion present, and the temperature. The intensity of the emission band at 592 $m\mu$ in $CH_{3}COOD$ with $10% (CH_{3}CO)_{2} O$ was about 20 times stronger than the corresponding emission band in triply-distilled $H_{2}O$, whereas the emission band at 613 $m\mu$ appeared about 300 times at strong. The ratio of the ($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{2}$)/($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{1}$) transitions varied from $7\times 10^{-2}$ to 1.1 whereas the ratio ($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{2}$)/($^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow ^{7} F_{2}$) varied only from 3.3 to 6.65. Possible participation of $^{5} D_{1}$ will be discussed.
