Abstract

The laser induced fluorescence spectra of $CH^{+}$ and $CD^{+}$ have been measured for the $A^{1}\Pi\leftarrow X^{1}\Sigma^{+}$ electronic $system.^{1}$ The ions were created by electron impact fragmentation of $CH_{4}$ and $CD_{4}$ leaving the product ion with a large amount of internal energy as indicated buy the broad rotational population distribution. Transitions originating in $v^{\prime\prime} = 0$ and 1 have been observed and many new J levels have been seen. A study has been made of the $A^{1}\Pi \to X^{1}\Sigma^{+}$ radiative transition rate with results disagreeing sharply with previously reported experimental values. Our studies indicate a $\tau_{0-0} = 840$ nsec.
