Abstract

It is known from the interpretation of the hyperfine structure in the microwave spectra of the NO molecule that the ground state (2π1/2) of this molecule has the wave function1^{2}\pi_{1/2}-0.0247 ^{2}\pi_{3/2}-0.0025 ^{2}\Sigma_{1/2}, in which 2π1/2(N(1s)2(2s)2(2pσ)2(2pπ):0(1s)2(2s)2(2pσ)2(2pπ)2) contains about 1% of N(1s)2(2s)(3s)(2pσ)2(2pπ) configuration.2 Dousmanus3 made an analysis of 2π1/2 part of the above wave function and concluded 35% ionic character. He, however, used a very crude one-electron approximation. In our paper it is more carefully examined without taking into account the ionic character.
