Abstract

It is known from the interpretation of the hyperfine structure in the microwave spectra of the NO molecule that the ground state ($^{2}\pi1/2$) of this molecule has the wave function$^{1}$^{2}\pi_{1/2}-0.0247 ^{2}\pi_{3/2}-0.0025 ^{2}\Sigma_{1/2}, in which $^{2}\pi_{1/2}(N(1s)^{2}(2s)^{2}(2p\sigma)^{2}(2p\pi):0(1s)^{2}(2s)^{2}(2p\sigma)^{2}(2p\pi)^{2})$ contains about 1% of $N(1s)^{2}(2s)(3s)(2p\sigma)^{2}(2p\pi)$ $configuration.^{2}$ $Dousmanus^{3}$ made an analysis of $^{2}\pi_{1/2}$ part of the above wave function and concluded 35% ionic character. He, however, used a very crude one-electron approximation. In our paper it is more carefully examined without taking into account the ionic character.
