Abstract

This report documents the performance of the Banco Agricola (BAGRICOLA) of the Dominican Republic, highlighting features that have weakened its autonomy and financial viability. The macroeconomic environment within which the bank has operated in the mid to late 1980s is reviewed in detail along with the changing structure of the country's financial markets. The bank's financial performance is analyzed during the 1980s underlining the principal factors behind its shortage of liquidity and operational losses. A systematic analysis of the non-performing loan portfolio is undertaken, followed by recommendations to improve its financial viability for the future.
