Abstract

The perturbation of the metastable $a^{3}\Pi$ state of $^{12}C^{16}O$ by the nearly degenerate $a^{13} \Sigma^{+}$ state has been directly observed in the molecular beam electric resonance radiofrequency spectrum of $v=4 a^{3}\Pi$. Interaction matrix elements have been extracted from combined radiofrequency and optical lambda doubling data. The Stark effect of $v=4$, anomalous with respect to that of the lower, unperturbed vibrations, indicates a perpendicular (transition) component of the dipole moment. Analysis of the $v=0 \rightarrow 3$ data yields the vibrational dependence of the spin-orbit, rotational, fine structure, and dipole moment constants.
