Abstract

Greater spectrometer sensitivity has allowed us to be observe new transitions in the $Q_{1}(0)$ vibrational spectra of impurity $D_{2}$ and HD in solid $paraghydrogen^{1,2}$. Because of these more comprehensive spectra and our greater theoretical understanding, we have been able to completely assign the observed transitions. The resulting energy level diagrams for the different impurities give a precise description of $J=1/J=0$ impurity pair interactions in the solid. One interesting discovery is the large variation of line broadening between $Q_{1}(0)$ transitions. This is qualitatively explained with a quadrupolar broadening mechanism.
