Abstract

“It is well known that fluorescence nearly always occurs from the lowest excited singlet level regardless of the wavelength of the exciting radiation. The purpose of the present paper is to submit results of the measurement of the variation of quantum efficiency of fluorescence with wavelength of exciting radiation for a number of hydrocarbons, including azulene, and some derivatives of anthracene. In addition the variation in quantum efficiency of phosphorescence with wavelength for naphthalene and its halogen substituted derivatives will be reported.”
