Abstract
This paper is an introduction to the book Regulacion, Competencia y Eficiencia en la Banca Costamcense, edited by Claudio Gonzalez-Vega and Edna Camacho-Mejia (San Jose: Ohio State University y Academia de Centroamerica, 1994). The paper discusses the concept of efficiency in banking and its importance in terms of social welfare, resource allocation and income distribution. Efficiency is reflected, among other things, in intermediation margins. The paper discusses the magnitude and determinants of these margins in Costa Rica. Special attention is given to financial technologies. It also considers regulation, competition, and the structure of property rights at private and state-owned banks. Finally, it examines reasons for government regulation and supervision of financial intermediaries and evaluates the process of financial reform in Costa Rica.
