Abstract

Infrared spectra of nitric oxide adsorbed on silica-supported metals; Fe, Co and Ni have been studied in the range from 1250−4000cm−1. A single band was observed for NO on NiSiO2 at 1860cm−1 whereas two distinctive bands of comparable intensity were observed for NO on both FeSiO2 (at 1812 and 1755cm−1) and CoSiO2 (at 1865 and 1795cm−1). The effects of pretreatment, surface coverage and equilibrium pressure and temperature on the spectra of chemisorbed NO have been investigated. The nature of chemisorbed species and the interaction of carbon monoxide, oxygen, and water vapor with the chemisorbed NO will be discussed.
