Abstract

Infrared spectra of nitric oxide adsorbed on silica-supported metals; Fe, Co and Ni have been studied in the range from $1250-4000 cm^{-1}$. A single band was observed for NO on $Ni-SiO_{2}$ at $1860 cm^{-1}$ whereas two distinctive bands of comparable intensity were observed for NO on both $Fe-SiO_{2}$ (at 1812 and $1755 cm^{-1}$) and $Co-SiO_{2}$ (at 1865 and $1795 cm^{-1}$). The effects of pretreatment, surface coverage and equilibrium pressure and temperature on the spectra of chemisorbed NO have been investigated. The nature of chemisorbed species and the interaction of carbon monoxide, oxygen, and water vapor with the chemisorbed NO will be discussed.
