Abstract
Healthcare has transitioned from volume-based to value-based care, leading healthcare
organizations to develop strategies to improve quality metrics while decreasing overall costs.
The shift from inpatient to outpatient total joint arthroplasty has forced hospitals to change the
care delivery trajectory for this patient population. Healthcare providers are seeing an increase
in time spent on documentation that may decrease time spent on direct patient care, and
potentially negatively impact nurse documentation burden. Documentation burden for the
purpose of this project is defined as the documentation complexity leading to increased time
spent on charting. The purpose of this DNP project is to compare perceived nurse burden related
to two types of nursing documentation – outpatient and inpatient. The overall goal is to
minimize the perceived nurse documentation burden through the implementation and evaluation
of a quality improvement project using outpatient charting capabilities on an inpatient
Orthopedic/General Surgery unit.
