Abstract
Instruments assembled from separate functional units or ``Building Blocks'' have many advantages in versatility and in ease of modernization and maintenance. For a special application, an instrument may be easily constructed by choosing the required blocks. A standard instrument such as an infrared spectometer may be kept up-to-date by replacing the block or blocks involved as improvements are developed. A table of the many blocks now available for use with Perkin-Elmer's single and double pass monochromator will be shown. Each of the functional blocks and typical instruments which may be assembled from them will be described.
