Abstract

The infrared $(3500-20 cm^{-1})$ and Raman $(3500-10 cm^{-1})$ spectra of some substituted vinylic compounds of the form $H_{2}C=C(X)CH_{2}Y$ where $X, Y = Cl$, and $CH_{3}$, have been recorded in the gaseous, liquid, and solid phases. From the far infrared spectra of the gases, the asymmetric torsional fundamental has been observed and, in some cases, the torsional transitions for a second conformer have been identified. In these latter cases the potential function governing the asymmetric torsion has been determined. Ab initio calculations have also been carried out for this series of molecules and these results will be compared with the experimental results.
