Abstract

Preliminary results are reported on the effect of solute-solvent interactions on the form of the DC1 fundamental Infrared absorption band. Traditional solvent effects such as solute frequency shifts, intensity changes, etc., are negligible in dilute solutions of DC1 in a series of alkanes. However, it is shown that the band shape exhibits important variations as a function of alkane chain length and isomerism. These results are discussed in terms of the correlation function for DC1 re-orientation. It is suggested that the use of a “small probe” solute molecule in a dilute solution provides a sensitive and direct method of investigating liquid structure.
