Abstract

As a part of a program of study of hydrogen bonding in pure liquids, the infrared spectra of dilute solutions of HDO in $H_{2}O$ and in $D_{2}O$ were examined between 0 and $100^{\circ}C$. The absorption frequencies, band shapes, and absolute intensities of all three HDO fundamentals and of several overtones were accurately determined. The changes in frequency, shape, and intensity of these bands with temperature are consistent with a gradual weakening of hydrogen bonds. There is no spectroscopic evidence for the occurrence of an appreciable concentration of non-hydrogen-bonded water molecules.
