Abstract
The Stark effect on the rotational fine structure in the 0-0 bands of the lowest lying electronic transition in aniline and phenol has been observed. From observed spectral splittings on various $J \approx K$ lines in the $^{P}P$ branch of aniline, a change in dipole moment of $|\Delta \mu|=0.85 \pm 0.20 D$ on excitation is obtained. A similar determination yields $|\Delta \mu|=0.2 \pm 0.2 D$ for phenol.
