Abstract
We have synthesized several transition metal complexes of alanine and in one case of glycine in order to study the VCD in these complexes relative to available spectra of free amino acids and peptides. In particular we have prepared all eight isomeric species of tris-(alaninato)- $Co^{III}$ as well as bis-(alaninato)-$Cu^{II}$, tris-(glycinato)-$Co^{III}$ and bis-(alaninato)-$Ni^{II}$. Spectra of the alanine complexes obtained to date in the C-H stretching region reveal close similarities to the VCD of free alanine with differences appearing in finer detail, as well as in magnitude. In general the transition metal complexes have more intense VCD, yet in some cases are harder to measure due to lower solubility. Implications of these spectra in terms of VCD intensities and relations of the free amino acid spectra will be discussed.
