Abstract
Temperature oscillations and impact shocks occurring during cycling of a closed-cycle helium refrigerator may cause excursions in the output frequency of a diode laser by as much as a gigahertz. We have characterized these frequency instabilities by observing their effects on spectra, and have developed stabilization techniques which have reduced these effects to less than observable (corresponding to frequency deviations less than 5 MHZ). In the resulting apparatus the diode mount is thermally coupled to the cold-tip of the refrigerator with a flexible copper strap and is rigidly fastened to the optical bench with a nylon stand-off. Intermediate temperature contacts on the stand-off allow the diode mount to get below $11^\circ K$.
