Abstract
In this thesis project, I explored some foundational concepts in the discussion of generalist and specialist tutoring approaches, then discussed how genre theory comes into play and what role it plays in differing and connecting generalist and specialized tutoring approaches. I’ve also drawn on other university writing centers' tutoring practices as well as previous scholarly research to propose potential methods and challenges of conducting genre theory in the practice of writing center. With more insight into genre practice and how separating the concept of genre from writing would potentially benefit the tutoring practice from the perspectives of consultant and tutee, I use this project to find a potential middle ground between generalist and specialist tutoring approaches through the conversation of genre theory and improve understanding of genre theory in writing center tutoring practice.
